How honest are you? How honest are you with yourself?
Recently I was reminded of the importance of honesty in the therapeutic process and relationship. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, therapy is foundationally about having a relationship with yourself. The cornerstone of this process is self-honesty. Many people view honesty as telling the truth to others but it is easy to forget that sometimes we are not being honest with ourselves.
Before we can be honest with others we first have to be radically honest with ourselves. Radical honesty first means taking accountability of our actions and circumstances. It also means looking at our experiences with an open mind and understanding. Honesty and acceptance can be a very difficult thing yet it is the foundation of healing and growth with ourselves and those around us.
